Cardboard Boat Race - Middle School Science

After this year’s science fair, student scientists shifted focus to engineering principles by exploring boat design. Each student created and presented a prototype boat model in preparation for the highly anticipated cardboard boat race across Willow Pond.

Following these individual presentations, students were placed in teams and given the challenge of building a full-sized cardboard boat using only cardboard and six rolls of duct tape. Teams applied principles of buoyancy, force, and design engineering while collaborating closely with classmates during the build process. They also collected empirical data about their boats, made predictions about race day performance, and analyzed their outcomes after the Field Day race on May 29th.

On race day, a new Lucy School record was set by Jennifer – Boat, whose paddler got her across Willow Pond in 1 minute and 13 seconds, blowing all of the other competition out of the water and delighting all in attendance. The hands-on investigations conducted during boat development, building, and racing showcase the students' ability to apply scientific and engineering knowledge in creative and practical ways, proving to be an engaging way to wrap up our year in science class.
